The 16 on the record.
Sixteen sitting MPs declared, in sworn election affidavits, cases that include crimes-against-women sections. Here they are: photo, party, seat, the exact sections, and where each case stands. Allegations — not convictions.
By party
Counts are of these 16 MPs only — not of party strength in Parliament.
Read this first
- Declared = the MP wrote it in their own sworn affidavit.
- Pending = no verdict. Many cases run for years.
- Sakhi writes “convicted” only if the affidavit says so.
- Sections like IPC 509 (insulting modesty) are much less serious than IPC 376 (rape). Each card shows the exact sections and what they mean.
- Presumption of innocence applies to all.
Sixteen is the narrow slice. Here is the wide one.
- 251 of 543 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs (46%) declared criminal cases; 170 (31%) declared serious ones including rape, murder, kidnapping. ADR, June 2024, as reported by Arunachal Times
- A candidate with declared cases had a 15.3% chance of winning; a candidate with a clean record had 4.4%. ADR, via The Mooknayak
- Across all sitting MPs and MLAs, 150 declare crimes-against-women cases: BJP 53, INC 23, TDP 17. West Bengal leads with 25, then Andhra Pradesh (21) and Odisha (17). ADR updated report, Aug 2024
Before you vote next time
- Look up every candidate on MyNeta ↗ — it is free and built from their own affidavits.
- Read the sections, not the headline count.
- Ask your candidates what they will do about the Fast Track court backlog in your district.
Method, credits and corrections
The 16 names, parties, seats, case counts and sections come directly from the annexure of ADR’s updated report (Aug 2024), which analyses sworn affidavits. We read that one published report; we did not scrape ADR’s database, whose terms forbid it. Nothing here goes beyond what that report states except plain-language explanations of the IPC sections.
Photos are from Wikimedia Commons under open licences (credited on each profile). Where no clearly identified, openly licensed photo exists, we show initials rather than guess.
Errors, stale entries, right of reply: an MP or their office can send a correction with a source and we will update and date it. Open an issue on the project’s GitHub repository.
